IHT recently designed, manufactured, and installed an infrared conveyor belt furnace and controls system for an aluminum billet forging application. The furnace system pre-heats aluminum billets to temperatures of approximately 750 Deg F – 950 Deg F depending upon the specific alloy and process. Throughput for the pictured furnace is 1 part every 15 seconds or 240 parts per hour. Typical heat residence time inside the furnace is 15 minutes to 35 minutes depending upon the billet size and weight. This reduced heat residence time as compared to traditional heating techniques has been shown to reduce grain growth, resulting in a smaller grain size structure in the forged part. This rapid infrared heating furnace technology was awarded an R&D 100 award in 2004 for one of the top 100 inventions of the year. The infrared conveyor belt furnace includes three heat zones that incorporate infrared tungsten short wave lamps as the heat source. The system also includes axial recirculation fans for convective assisted heating and temperature uniformity. The controls include a PLC and color touch screen HMI for ease of use. These systems have been implemented for preheating aluminum in forging processes, pre-heating aluminum for ring rolling, pre-heating steel for coatings, annealing springs, tempering, curing, and a number of other processes.
